DAVAO City is experiencing a downward trend of active Covid-19 cases, Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio said.

In a radio interview on Monday, February 8, 2021, Duterte-Carpio said based on the recent Covid-19 data, the city’s active cases have been going down in recent days.

According to the Department of Health-Davao Region data as of February 7, Davao City has a total of 1,399 active cases, while the total confirmed cases is at 12,071, wherein 10,099 recovered and 573 died.

Since January 2021, the city’s active cases have not yet reached 1,600.

While the mayor did not provide further explanation on the data, she said active cases are now lower compared to the height of the modified general community quarantine (MGCQ).

“As nakita nato last year sa atong experience during the height sa atong MGCQ, didtoa pud nagtaas ang atong cases. Ang pinakadaghan ato around that time was 2,500 active cases per day. And napababa nato siya to approximately 1,300 cases a day. Na-manage siya sa atoang facilities and hospitals,” Duterte-Carpio said.

(Based on our observation last year, during the height of MGCQ, there was a surge in cases, wherein the highest active cases, by far, was around 2,500 per day. Now, we are able to lower it down to around 1,300 cases per day. This was managed through our facilities and hospitals.)

Despite the improvement in the figures, she said this is still not an assurance that the city will be qualified to shift to MGCQ.

She said the city can ease restrictions if the situation deems it “manageable,” citing regulations on gatherings, which is currently limited to 25 persons.

The mayor also said the city can either lift or revise the implementation of the liquor ban and curfew.

“These are things within our control nga pwede nato i-revise kung sa tan-aw nato medyo (that we can revise if it is) safe,” Duterte-Carpio said.

The mayor reminded the public to still adhere to health protocols.

“Sa tanan nga atong activities, di nato kalimtan ang mga (Let us not forget about the) minimum health protocols,” Duterte-Carpio said.

Davao City Covid-19 focal person Dr. Ashley Lopez said in a previous virtual presser that the city is experiencing a post-holiday surge because during the holidays, gatherings were expected despite constant warnings against holding such.

Lopez said the case surge was felt during the first week of January and is expected to last until mid-February 2021.
