DAVAO CITY — The Department of Agriculture (DA) 11 launched the recently revitalized “Gulayan sa Barangay” livelihood program in Paquibato District, this city.
The project, which is among the Plant, Plant, Plant programs of the agency, aims to ensure food adequacy through production expansion and crop diversification amid the new normal due to the threat of emerging diseases particularly COVID-19.
According to Merriel Aglibot, High-Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP) of DA 11, the “Gulayan sa Barangay” Program is aimed at developing barangay communal gardens in the?? 340 barangays in Davao Region.
The program will also ensure continuity of assisting the local government units (LGUs) in establishing at least one communal vegetable garden in each barangay.
Under the program, the DA will provide each barangay with farm tools ?such as ?garden? ?hoe, ?shovel,? ?scythe, ?and? wheel ??barrow? along ?with? ?two? ?packs? ?of? ?lowland vegetable seeds.
During the launching last week, 13 barangays in Paquibato District each received a set of garden tools. The barangays are Colosas, Fatima, Lumiad, Mabuhay, Malabog, Mapula, Pañalum, Pandaitan, Paquibato Proper, Paradise Embac, Salapawan, Sumimao, and Tapak.
The Davao City Agriculture Office is providing technical assistance in the form of training for small groups and dissemination of printed vegetable production guides.
DA 11 Executive Director Ricardo Oñate Jr. said DA 11 will assist barangay?s through? maintenance and other operational concerns of the communal garden.
“For 2021, DA 11 targets to establish 200 new vegetable gardens in Davao Region to produce at least five kinds of vegetables. We will also strengthen the production of indigenous vegetables,” Oñate said.
