DAVAO CITY — Due to consistent complaints of favoritism in the distribution of rice rations in the barangays, Mayor Sara Duterte decided to assign the task to the LGBTQ sector.
In her regular interview at the Davao City Disaster Radio, the mayor said there have been recurring complaints of favoritism in the rice distribution in the grassroots level.
She said because of this, she decided to assign the lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender (LGBT) sector through Commissioner Norman Baloro of the Presidential Commission on the Urban Poor (PUCP) to head the rice distribution.
“We have a recurring problem about unfair distribution of rice. Some say that those who are friends with the barangay officials are the only one who receive the rice assistance,” she said.
“For our fifth round of rice distribution, we cut the political structure and gave it to the LGBTQ sector instead,” she added.
The mayor said she decided to give the task to the LGBTQ since they understand the concept of inclusivity better.
“The LGBT sector would be the best to understand the meaning of inclusivity. I already told them that they should not favor the LGBTQ community only. They need to find the people who are in great need,” she said.
She said the critical sectors include those who have not received any form of food or monetary assistance from the government since the crisis started.
The city government has been distributing food assistance to the residents to aid them during the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ), giving 4,000 kilograms of rice to each of the 182 barangays in the city since the COVID-19 pandemic started.
While the LGBTQ will handle the distribution of rice per barangay, the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) will still handle the distribution of other ration goods.
