Manila, PHILIPPINES – After hinting about a possible senatorial bid for the upcoming May 2022 elections, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque finally filed his certificate of candidacy for senator on Monday, November 15.
Running under the People’s Reform Party of the late Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago, Roque is the substitute candidate of Paolo Martelino who withdrew his candidacy earlier.
This will be the second attempt of the presidential spokesperson to win a seat in the 24-member Senate after he dropped his Senate bid few months before the midterm elections in 2019 due to health reasons.
As he is automatically resigned as presidential spokesperson, he had his last press briefing few hours before his filing, where he also formally announced his decision.
“Babalik po sana tayo sa Kongreso ng Pilipinas, dun po sa Kamara ng Senado. Mula sa inyong pagiging spokesperson ay nais ko pong maging action man sa Senado,” said Roque
Roque is fresh from a failed bid for a seat at the United Nation’s International Law Commission, which is mandated to “initiate studies and make recommendations for the purpose of encouraging the progressive development of international law and its codification”. TNF
