ALMOST 600 families were displaced, while two casualties were recorded due to the floods experienced in Davao del Norte due to the low-pressure area (LPA).

In a report from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) as of 12 noon Thursday, January 5, a total of 15,868 families composed of 73,822 individuals coming from the municipalities of Asuncion, Kapalong, Sto. Tomas, New Corella, Carmen; and Tagum City were highly affected by the flood, which started on Monday evening, January 2.

Of the total affected, 581 families or 2,403 individuals had to be evacuated and placed in temporary shelters after rainfall and water from the higher parts of the province trickled down and swelled the nearby river.

Several displaced families affected by the floods from Barangay Cabaywa were housed in the Kapalong College of Agriculture, Sciences, and Technology (KCAST) Evacuation Center in Kapalong town.

PDRRMO head Glenda Delideli told SunStar Davao on Thursday afternoon, January 5, that only a few families had remained at the evacuation center, while the rest had already returned to their residences when the flood water already subsided.

Delideli said the provincial government immediately distributed food packs to the affected families displaced by floods.

A 57-year-old man from the same barangay was found dead after the rampaging flood waters drowned him.

A five-year-old girl also drowned because of rushing canal water.

PDRRMO reported that the water level is currently at a normal level. However, they continue to monitor flood waters in downstream areas.

Based on the partial report as of Thursday afternoon, Delideli said a total of P18,766,614.57 worth of damage was recorded for the agriculture sector. Damage to infrastructure is still being collated. RGL
