ILOILO City – Popular radio blocktimer and candidate for mayor here Salvador “Jun” Capulot was served by policemen with arrest warrants for cyber libel on Friday afternoon.
But minutes after, he was able to post bail to secure his temporary liberty.
Six counts of cyber libel complaint were filed against Capulot, 49, by former Guimaras governor Rahman Nava. Each count had a bail bond of P10,000.
Capulot, a resident of Jaro district, was arrested by Jaro policemen in Mandurriao district at around 12:45 p.m. minutes before he was to begin his 1 p.m. blocktime radio program.
He was handcuffed and taken to the Jaro police station where his mug shots were taken.
In a radio interview, Nava’s legal counsel Atty. Hans Sayno said the cases stemmed from the commentaries made by Capulot against his client in October 2021.
The arrest warrants (in Criminal Case Nos. 22-3519 to 22-3524) were issued on Feb. 15, 2022 by Judge Rosario Abigail Magay Dris-Villabueva of the Regional Trial Court, Branch 65 in Jordan, Guimaras.
Iloilo City reelectionist mayor Jerry Treñas denied having a hand in Capulot’s arrest.
“I have nothing to do with the warrants of arrest served on my opponent Jun Capulot. I understand that these were issued by the court in Guimaras. Wala gid ako labot sa ini nga mga kaso,” stressed Treñas.
The city mayor issued the statement following speculations on social media that he may have a hand in the arrest.
Capulot, who also runs a Facebook page “Jun Capulot News Live”, is a staunch critic of Treñas./PN
