ILOILO – Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. supports the presidential bid of Vice President Leni Robredo in the May 2022 elections.
He and Robredo were colleagues in the House of Representatives from 2013 until 2016 when the then congresswoman from Camarines Sur’s 3rd District decided to run for the vice presidency.
Defensor, congressman of Iloilo’s 3rd District for three terms (2010–2013, 2013–2016, 2016–2019), cited Robredo’s “sincerity”.
“Kon tan-awon mo ang mata sang tawo may sinseridad nga magbulig sa aton,” said the governor.
Defensor also believes Robredo can provide a government committed to the equitable use of resources.
He plans to invite mayors under the National Unity Party (NUP) to support the vice president’s candidacy.
“Hagaron naton sila nga maupod sa aton without preempting party and supporters,” Defensor said.
Iloilo City’s Mayor Jerry Treñas, Defensor’s party-mate, earlier declared his support for Robredo.
“May (local leaders) naman kita nga nasugilanon sa iban nga parti sang Pilipinas, but we will wait for their own pronouncements,” Defensor said.
Robredo is running as an independent candidate.
Defensor said he also supports Robredo’s vice presidential candidate, Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilanan.
For the senatoriables, Defensor said though he will support Robredo’s slate, he has others being eyed from other parties.
Defensor did not mention who they are but said “buligan ta ang nagbulig man sa probinsya.”
The governor also clarified all candidates for president are welcome in Iloilo.
Based on the calendar of activities of the Commission on Elections, the campaign period for national candidates will begin on Feb. 8, while local candidates on March 25./PN
