COVID-19 cases in Negros Occidental went up further to 167, after 29 new cases were logged yesterday by the Provincial Incident Management Team (PIMT).
Seven recoveries were also reported on August 7, PIMT record show.
Iloilo province still ranks first in terms of the greatest number of COVID-19 cases at 1,030 while Guimaras has the least number of cases at 45, according to report of the Department of Health – Western Visayas.
The DOH also announced that Western Visayas logged two cases of the Centaurus variant, the first two to be recorded in the Philippines.
The Centaurus or BA.2.75 subvariant of the COVID-19 Omicron variant was initially discovered in India.
The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) on July 7 classified it as a “variant under monitoring”.
The sub-variant was a result of mutation that can either become weakened, or evolve and become stronger and more transmissible, DOH said.*
