THE Department of Health (DOH) confirmed on Friday, January 7, 2022, that two of the recently detected Omicron variant cases are constituents of Northern Mindanao.

According to DOH-Northern Mindanao Director Jose Llacuna Jr., the two returning overseas Filipinos (ROFs), a seaman and a college student, are residents of Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro City, respectively.

DOH-Northern Mindanao Regional Epidemiology, Surveillance and Disaster Response Unit (Resdru) cluster head Dr. Stephanie Zamora said the Iligan resident is an unvaccinated 40-year-old male seaman, who arrived in Cebu via Qatar Airways on December 16, 2021.

The man was isolated at Jpark Hotel Cebu and was transferred to St. Michael Hotel on December 23.

He ended his quarantine with certification on December 30. His flight back to Iligan City was on the same day.

Zamora said the man is currently asymptomatic and tagged as recovered.

Resdru-Northern Mindanao Chief Dr. Jasper Kent Ola added that they have instructed the City Health Office of Iligan City to conduct re-swabbing for confirmatory tests.

The second Omicron case is a fully vaccinated 20-year-old female college student who is a resident in Barangay 1, Cagayan de Oro City.

Zamora said the woman was an ROF from Las Vegas, USA. She arrived in the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on December 22, 2021 and was isolated in Makati Oxford Hotel.

The 20-year-old woman was transferred to Manila Prince Hotel on December 31 and is still on isolation.

Zamora said the woman is currently asymptomatic and has already recovered.

Ola clarified that the two Omicron cases were tagged in the region due to their place of residence.
