ILOILO – Families whose houses were totally destroyed by super typhoon “Odette” last month would be getting P5,000 assistance each from the National Housing Authority (NHA).
On Jan. 12, NHA turned over to the provincial government the assistance totaling P20 million, almost a month after “Odette” struck the province on Dec. 17, 2021.
Beneficiaries should use the assistance to buy construction materials to rebuild their houses.
According to Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr., those whose houses were partially damaged would soon be getting assistance, too, but he did not say how much and when.
“Sa subong, for totally damaged anay. More help will come,” said Defensor.
“Odette” was the last typhoon (the 15th) to hit the country in 2021 but it was also the strongest, according to the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration. It brought torrential rains, violent winds, floods and storm surges to the Visayas and Mindanao.
NHA-Iloilo district manager Fe Jamoyot turned over the P20-million check to Defensor on Wednesday. It came from the agency’s Special Emergency Housing Assistance Program.
Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) records showed 1,800 totally-damaged houses in the province due to “Odette” and 44,000 partially-damaged houses.
Jamoyot said aid for families with partially damaged houses was still being processed by NHA./PN
