ILOILO City – Statistics has a great role in the economic and social recovery of Western Visayas from the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
This was emphasized by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) in Region 6 as it marked the National Statistics Month.
Relevant statistics is solid evidence that will guide the nation’s decision- and policy-makers in navigating the pandemic towards socioeconomic recovery, according to PSA-6 director Fred Sollesta.
“Based sa facts or kamatuoran. Indi sia na-anchor sa pahaom-haom,” Sollesta said.
Now on its 32nd year, this year’s month-long celebration has the theme: “Revving up for Economic and Social Recovery through Evidence-Based Policies.”
Among the activities prepared by the NSM steering committee, spearheaded by the Regional Statistics Committee, included virtual lecture series, virtual exhibit, poster-making contest, and statistical analysis quiz, among others to be conducted from Oct. 4 to 28.
“Dapat ma-engage naton ang tanan nga stakeholders nga nagagamit sang statistics and even ang pumoluyo para maintindihan ang importansya (sini),” said Sollesta.
This year’s agency host for the celebration is the Department of Labor and Employment.
NSM was first observed in 1990 pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 647 signed by then President Corazon Aquino on Sept. 20, 1990, declaring October of every year as NSM.
NSM celebration aims to:
* promote, enhance and instill awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics to the different sectors of society; and
* elicit the cooperation and support of the general public in upgrading the quality and standards of statistics in the country./PN
