Presumptive Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio is supporting the postponement of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections from December 5 this year to May 6, 2024 to save money.
This is in relation to House Bill 10425 seeking to postpone Dec. 5, 2022, to May 6, 2024 filed by Davao Oriental Representative Joel Almario in November last year. The SK and Barangay elections are also scheduled only seven months after the May national and local elections.
“Kana siya manginahanglan na siya ug balaod gikan sa atoang House of Representatives and the Senate para ma-postpone ang barangay elections because we can save money dinha sa pagpahigayon ug elections which our the new administration can use para sa mga mas importante na butang sa pagka-karon na epekto tungod sa economic downturn that we see all around the world,” Duterte-Carpio said during the Special Hour with Mayor Inday Sara Duterte on Monday.
Duterte-Carpio added that there is nothing wrong to conduct the national, local and barangay elections in just one year.
“We’ll wait for that balaod na buhaton sa kongreso na to suspend the barangay elections. There is nothing wrong nga sa isa lang ka tuig ang national, local and barangay elections. Sa pagka-karon ang pinakadako nga mahinungdanon na rason kung nganoo kinahanglan or puwede i-postpone ang barangay elections is the savings that we get niana na activity,” she said.
The national government was reported allocating some P8 billion from the national budget for the barangay and SK elections this year.
