ILOILO – Damage left by Monday’s flooding in 54 villages in Miag-ao town reached nearly P5 million as of Tuesday noon.
The damage to the agriculture sector reached P3,693,000 covering 205 hectares of rice paddies while that on infrastructure was more or less P1 million, said Mayor Macario Napulan in an interview with Panay News.
Many livestock also either drifted away or died, he added.
The damage would likely increase. Napulan said 32 of the 54 flooded barangays have so far submitted their reports.
Three major rivers in Miag-ao overflowed on Monday afternoon – Tumagboc, Oyungan and Bacauan.
“Ang overflow nag-extend gid 10 to 15 meters halin sa suba,” Napulan said.
Trapped residents were rescued: three in Barangay Igsoligue, four in Barangay Indag-an and two in Barangay Malagyan. There were no reported casualties.
According to Napulan, Monday’s flood was one of the biggest in Miag-ao.
From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. heavy rains pounded the town.
“Way man hangin pero dulom ang bukid, nag-umpisa ang ulan mga 1 p.m. Damol. Sige-sige. Mga 4 p.m. amo ‘to pag-umpisa sang baha nga daku,” said Napulan.
Farmers whose crops and livestock were damaged would receive assistance./PN
