Local leaders in Davao begin filing COCs over the weekend

LOCAL chief executives in Davao Region had already filed their certificates of candidacy (COC), with some seeking reelection for the same position.

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio filed her COC on Saturday afternoon, October 2 in Davao City seeking reelection as the city’s mayor.

Duterte-Carpio arrived at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) office inside Magsaysay Park around 4 p.m.

In a Facebook post, the mayor thanked her supporters for their trust and confidence.

“I have been honored with the gift of trust and respect of many of our fellow Filipinos. Thank you to everyone who have expressed their support. Many of you do not know me and yet you carry me over your shoulders,” Duterte-Carpio said.

“Like the other millions of Filipinos, I share with you the same goal of living a peaceful and prosperous life in our country, today and in the many years to come. I call on everyone to work together for an honest, orderly, and credible election in May 2022,” Duterte-Carpio added.

This will be her third time running for mayor of Davao City. She was first elected as mayor in 2010.

Meanwhile, The supporters of Duterte-Carpio had been conducting motorcades across the country, urging her to run for the presidency in the 2022 elections. However, amid rumors and calls for her to run for president, Duterte-Carpio said she will be seeking reelection in the upcoming elections.

Davao City Vice Mayor Sebastian Duterte filed his COC on Sunday afternoon, October 3. He is seeking reelection as vice mayor. He also filed the COC of his older brother, First District Representative Paolo Duterte. Paolo is currently in isolation due to Covid-19.

Davao de Oro Governor Jayvee Tyron Uy filed his COC on Saturday morning, October 2.

Uy seeking reelection for the same position.

The governor said he is running again to continue the programs he started since he was elected in 2016.

In his Facebook post, Uy said many improvements came after he became governor, including addressing insurgency in the province, which had been a long-time problem.

“Now Davao de Oro is the second most competitive province in Davao Region in terms of business competitiveness gikan sa ulahing pwesto kaniadtong 2016,” he said.

It was also under his term when the province’s name was changed from Compostela Valley in late 2019.

Davao del Norte Governor Edwin Jubahib is also running again for governor in the province for his second term.

Jubahib, who was elected in 2019, said he is seeking reelection as the province continues to struggle with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Among the accomplishments he shared during an interview with the media is the zero billing in the district provincial hospitals in the province — Kapalong District Hospital, Carmen District Hospital and Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos) District Hospital. This is being implemented through an executive order.

Meanwhile, incumbent Davao Oriental First District Representative Corazon Malanyaon filed her COC on Saturday at the Comelec Provincial office.

Malanyaon is planning to run for the gubernatorial race after current Governor Nelson Dayanghirang announced that will be running for Congress in next year’s election.

Before she served as the current first district representative, the lawmaker also served as the provincial governor for three terms from 2007 to 2016.

If given the chance to serve again the people of Davao Oriental as their governor, Malanyaon said she will continue the development programs of the province, especially on tourism development.

Davao del Sur information officer Sherwin Cesar told SunStar Davao in a text message that Governor Marc Cagas will be filing his COC on October 8, the last day of filing. He is seeking reelection.

Marc assumed his current position after his father, longtime governor Douglas “Dodo” Cagas, passed away on June 10, 2021 due to complications of Covid-19.

Davao Occidental Governor Claude Bautista, meanwhile, has not yet announced if he will also be seeking reelection for the same position in the next year’s poll.

Bautista is also one of the officials, pushing Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio to run for president.
