“YOU better watch out, you better not cry.”

The warning came from Dr. Ronel Sario, president of the Philippine College of Physicians (PCP)-Negros Occidental Chapter, as he expressed fear for a possible resurgence of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases after the holiday season.

Sario said the attitude of the people when the restrictions were lifted, wherein they act like there is no pandemic anymore, could trigger the resurgence.

He said health protocols are no longer observed properly while gatherings happen everywhere.

Parents even bring their children to public places like malls where they are exposed to the virus, Sario added.

The doctor noted that it is a sad reality that protocol adherence is less evident now.

Asked what will happen if the resurgence of Covid-19 cases occurs, Sario said the facilities are always there but the city and the province are still facing depletion of manpower since the start of the pandemic.

The PCP-Negros Occidental noted an erratic trend of active Covid-19 cases in Negros Occidental lately despite the fact that its capital city, Bacolod, has slid to Alert Level 1 in terms of the virus transmission.

As of December 24, Bacolod’s Hospital utilization rate is at 19.74 percent while 35.48 percent in Negros Occidental, records from the Department of Health-Western Visayas showed.

Covid-19 cases’ growth rate in Bacolod City decreased by 44.81 percent, while 46.84 percent in Negros Occidental.

“We are like a broken record already as we keep on repeating public adherence to health protocols and the importance of vaccination,” Sario said.

He said adherence should not only be done on a single protocol only as it will keep the people safe from the virus, adding that “we should think of the safety of our family in every action or activity we get into.”
