DESPITE the increasing number of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases in Negros Occidental and Bacolod City, the provincial chapter of the Philippine College of Physicians (PCP) is not keen on seeking stricter quarantine status.

PCP-Negros Occidental President RonelSario told SunStar Bacolod that the situation in the hospitals is currently manageable.

Sario said, though, that they continue to appeal from the public to follow minimum health protocols and avoid going out if it is not necessary.

He said it is apparent that the cases of Covid-19 right now are going up and he attributed that to the detection of the highly-contagious Delta variant of the disease.

Negros Occidental, including the highly urbanized Bacolod City, has been classified by the Department of Health (DOH) in Western Visayas under Alert Level 3, or moderate and high risk areas of transmission, respectively.

The DOH last week said it is expecting new Covid-19 cases to peak by the middle of the September, as the feared Delta variant further drives up the number of infections.

The agency noted a “steep increase in new cases” last week with a daily average of 17,013 cases per day, which is higher than the 14,886 infections in the previous week.
