BACOLOD City – The 61 punong barangays in this city were urged to designate barangay sanitary inspectors (BSI) whose task is to work on raising health and sanitation standards in their villages to prevent food- and water-borne diseases.
The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) passed a resolution yesterday requesting Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez to enjoin punong barangays to designate their respective BSI.
BSIs have an indispensable role in the community’s health, especially in the prevention and control of diseases from spreading, as sanitarians primarily initiate the proper implementation of environmental sanitation, the resolution stated.
Meanwhile, the City Health Office leads efforts to promote zero open defecation (ZOD) following reported cases of food- and water-borne diseases like acute gastroenteritis and cholera in the city.
The SP committee on health and sanitation also encourages barangays to strive for ZOD in every household and enjoins everyone to adopt sanitary practices to avoid sickness and improve quality of life./PN
