The good news is that there is a downtrend in Covid-19 cases in Davao City. The bad news? The number of Covid-related deaths is still in double digits.
Dr. Michelle Schlosser, spokesperson of Davao City Covid-19 Task Force, reported that the city has recorded 16 deaths from September 11 to 16, 2022.
Schlosser said of the 16 deaths recorded, seven are senior citizens, four from the 50 to 59 years old age group, one from the less than five years old age group and one from the 5 to 12 years old.
“For this week naa tay 16 deaths. It is still double digit. Reminder sa mga parents and guardians na kaning 5 to 12 years old this is already eligible for vaccination labi na karon na nag face-to-face na ang mga schools ma prevent unta ang death among 5 to 12 years old,” Schlosser said over Davao City Disaster Radio (DCDR) on Wednesday.
She also said that majority of the 16 deaths are unvaccinated.
“Nine we’re unvaccinated and the rest are vaccinated but very significant among the vaccinated duha lang naka receive ug booster doses,” she said.
She reported last week that there were 19 deaths wherein majority were senior citizens, including six who already received the two-dose primary series but never had any booster shot. The other five were unvaccinated.
For this week, there is a down trending of cases putting Davao City’s positivity rate at 10 percent.
“However, wala ni nagpasabot nga wala natay kalaban,” she said.
The Davao City Covid-19 Task Force has reiterated its call for senior citizens and persons with comorbidities to have their booster shots for added protection against the severity of the disease that could result in death.
Schlosser stressed that studies show that the COVID-19 vaccines’ effectiveness waned after six months, which is why boosters are needed. Other routine vaccines for children and adults also needed to be received periodically like flu shots that are taken yearly while regular children’s vaccines also have their boosters.
